Remapping for Towing and Load Carrying

Who this is for

The vehicles we’re most often asked about for towing work:

• Cars towing caravans or twin-axle trailers.
• Vans regularly carrying heavy loads.
• Commercial vehicles working at or near their normal operating weight.
• Suitable SUVs and pick-ups used for horseboxes, plant or trailers.

Why usable torque matters when loaded

Pulling weight is mostly about the torque available at the engine speeds you sit at on a gradient or joining a motorway. A vehicle that feels adequate unloaded can feel busy and downshift-happy with a trailer behind it.

Where a calibration can improve delivery in that band, towing becomes calmer: fewer gear changes, less labouring, more consistent progress on long climbs.

What a remap does not change

A remap does not alter the manufacturer’s legal towing limits or permitted vehicle weights. Gross vehicle weight, gross train weight, maximum towing mass and noseweight remain exactly as specified.

Nor does it change your licence entitlement or any legal requirement relating to what you are towing. Improved delivery is about how the vehicle copes within its existing limits.

Condition is even more important on a tow vehicle

Towing puts sustained load through the cooling system, transmission, clutch and turbocharger. Those are exactly the areas we consider during the Pre-Remap Health Check.

If a tow vehicle shows signs of cooling or transmission strain, that gets addressed before any calibration is discussed further.

The Pre-Remap Health Check comes first

Before any calibration work begins, we carry out relevant diagnostic and vehicle-condition checks. The exact checks depend on the vehicle, engine, diagnostic information and any known concerns.

If the vehicle is not in the right condition for remapping, we do not continue with the calibration until the issue has been addressed. That is the part of our process customers tend to remember: vehicle condition first, remapping second.
