Why condition matters before calibration

A remap does not repair anything. It changes the instructions the engine works to, and those instructions are carried out by real hardware — turbochargers, injectors, pumps, sensors, cooling systems, clutches and gearboxes.

If something in that chain is already marginal, a revised calibration can make an existing weakness more obvious. Checking first is not caution for its own sake; it is how you avoid turning a hidden issue into an expensive one.

What we may look at

The exact checks depend on the vehicle, engine, diagnostic information and any known concerns. Depending on the vehicle, the areas we consider can include:

• Diagnostic trouble codes, both current and stored.
• Warning lights and what the vehicle is reporting.
• General engine condition and how the vehicle is running.
• Turbocharger-related concerns where applicable.
• Boost-related behaviour on turbocharged engines.
• Fuel-system concerns.
• Cooling-system concerns.
• Gearbox and clutch considerations, particularly on working or high-mileage vehicles.
• Emissions-system faults.
• Evidence of poor or deferred maintenance.
• Known mechanical issues the owner is already aware of.

Not every vehicle receives every possible test

This is a pre-remap suitability assessment, not a full mechanical inspection of the entire vehicle, and we will not pretend otherwise.

If something isn’t right, we stop

If a vehicle is not in the right condition for remapping, we do not continue with the calibration until the issue has been addressed.

We explain what we have found in plain terms and advise on the appropriate next step. Sometimes that is a repair elsewhere first. Sometimes it is a smaller calibration change than originally discussed. Occasionally it is a recommendation not to remap the vehicle at all.
