What matters more than mileage
The factors that genuinely decide suitability:
- Maintenance history and whether servicing kept pace with use.
- How the miles were covered — steady motorway running versus short cold journeys.
- Current diagnostic information, including stored fault codes.
- Turbocharger, fuel-system and cooling-system condition.
- Clutch and gearbox condition on manual and high-mileage vehicles.
Where we tend to be cautious
Signs of cooling strain, oil consumption, transmission slip or smoke under load are all reasons to pause. So is a vehicle with a history of deferred repairs.
In those cases the sensible recommendation may be a more conservative calibration, or none at all.
Why the check matters most here
High-mileage vehicles vary enormously between examples, which is exactly why we assess each one rather than relying on a rule of thumb.
If the vehicle isn’t ready for a remap, the remap isn’t ready to happen.
